MSNBC ‘Maddow’ blogger Steve Benen has slammed Republican ambitions to impeach President Biden after he took control of Congress midterm, calling it ‘nonsense’ and a ‘misguided impeachment crusade’ .
In his Wednesday Maddow blog, Benen denounced Republican calls to impeach Biden if they take control of the House and Senate in the upcoming midterm elections. He said it’s clear that’s what Republicans want to do.
“The kind of government priorities Republicans intend to pursue if voters give them a majority in Congress is far from clear, but there is no doubt that this is one of the main political priorities of the GOP,” he said, quoting an excerpt from a Hill article that said a “top priority” for the GOP next year is to “impeach President Biden.”
Hill’s article added: “But with Republicans widely expected to win a House majority by midterm, many of these same conservatives want to use their potential new powers to oust a president they deem unfit. Some would like to make it a first order of business.”
NO-GO JOE: BIDEN HAS NOT YET VISITED BORDER AFTER NEARLY 2 YEARS IN OFFICE AS WH MAKES DOUBTFUL CLAIM
Benen began his analysis by already rejecting an impeachment request. “The article quoted various GOP lawmakers and their spokespersons, including Rep. Bob Good of Virginia, insisting that the Democratic president ‘should be impeached for intentionally opening our border,’ despite the fact that it doesn’t ever happened in reality,” he wrote.
The blogger took a brief step back and noted how calls to impeach Biden began “long before the Delaware Democrat even secured his party’s nomination” when Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, “raised perspective two years ago,” on what Benen called “conspiracy theories” about Hunter Biden’s dealings with energy company Burisma and Ukraine.
Benen claimed impeachment ambitions at the time were “far too ridiculous to support, and even Ernst stopped talking about the idea.” Although, as he mentioned, calls for Biden’s impeachment have gained momentum.
“After Biden’s inauguration, several House Republicans filed articles of impeachment against the Democratic president, and earlier this year Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas added that he believed a House led by the Republicans would likely consider impeaching Biden on ‘multiple grounds’. says Benen.
Although the blogger dismissed all such impeachment ideas, writing, “For now, let’s set aside the obvious fact that the incumbent president has committed no serious crime; the border is not open; -a-Lago search; and this partisan fixation is just ridiculous.”
Benen then raised the argument that the Senate would never convict Biden, even if impeached. “Let’s also set aside the fact that if voters reward Republicans with a majority in the House and the GOP uses its power to impeach the president, that wouldn’t have much practical impact since the Senate wouldn’t convict him of anyway.”
Denouncing the GOP’s impeachment ambitions in even stronger terms, he called them “nonsense.”
BORDER PATROL APPREASES GROUP OF 100 MIGRANTS IN CALIFORNIA, MOSTLY FROM 12 COUNTRIES OTHER THAN MEXICO
He also ridiculed efforts by Republican leaders to end this burgeoning impeachment rhetoric. Blasting House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., For being unable to steer GOP members away from the topic, he wrote, “It’s easy to believe that McCarthy would want to focus his energies elsewhere at the next Congress, but he is also clear that the Californian is more likely to be directed than to actually lead.”
As such, Benen concluded, “The result is an emerging 2022 midterm campaign issue: A vote for Congressional Republicans will likely turn out to be a vote for a misguided impeachment crusade.”
