Nigerian senator pledges to find Instagram blogger over alleged defamatory statement

The legislator representing the Lagos West Senatorial District, Solomon Adeola, reacted to an allegation made against him by an Instagram blogger identified as gistloversblog11.

The chairman of the Senate Finance Committee in a press release published on Friday threatened to find Gistlover whom he accuses of having tarnished his image, his reputation.

The Instagram blogger had accused the lawmaker of buying a house for a Jumoke Odetola with a constituency fund.

Adeola in a statement released by Kayode Odunaro said: “The frivolous and unsubstantiated allegations of the ‘Constituency Fund’ and a ‘Jumoke Odetola’ would have been completely ignored for the simple reason of the cowardly practice of coming from a nameless and faceless entity known for its fixation on the defamation for ulterior motives.

“However, this is the second time in a row that the same account has engaged in the vexatious and false storytelling suggesting a paid agenda to destroy a hard-earned reputation and a good family life that must be executed at all costs using the one of the handful of ‘gistloversblogs’.

“It is for the above reason of paid commission and the regrettable and reprehensible fact of some online media writing and publishing stories with asserted headlines from an anonymous and faceless source that Senator Adeola has decided to set the record straight for his many fans, political supporters and the general public.

“Otherwise, it is unwise to engage a cowardly, nameless, faceless destructive and negative entity allegedly practicing what is termed ‘citizen journalism’ on social media.

“For the record, the allegations contained in the question in reference are totally false because there is no way for Senator Adeola to use a “constituency fund” which does not belong to him directly but relates to projects carried out by government agencies to buy a house without an address for a “Jumoke Odetola” or indeed anyone for that matter. The senator, a good family man who loves his wife and children dearly, also denies in strong terms any association in any form with a person named “Jumoke Odetola” or any other person as repeatedly alleged by the sole “gistloversblog” in an obviously destructive program.

“Looking ahead, Senator Adeola notes that until now he had been one of the main advocates of the positive aspects of using social media in the modern world and opposed any legislative agenda of Parliament. government to regulate the use of social media, adding that following the activities of ‘gistloversblog’ and similar entities, he has now pledged to pursue a legislative agenda in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to regulate the use of social media for destructive purposes as being used by entities like “gistloversblog”.

“On different occasions on the Senate floor, I had opposed the legislative program to regulate the use of social media for its positive benefits. But in the wake of recent developments, I am now making it one of my legislative agendas in the current session of the Senate to pursue an agenda to regulate the use of social media against abusive, faceless, and nameless users. like “gistloversblog”. The argument of resorting to legal means to obtain justice from certain people against any form of social media regulation no longer holds when we are dealing with “social media ghosts” such as “gistloversblogs” which collaterally harm the noble profession of journalism with their lack of professionalism. conduct disguised as a form of journalism”.
