Police have opened an investigation into the alleged kidnapping of blogger Dennis Itumbi.
In a statement released Friday, National Police Service (NPS) spokesman Bruno Shioso said detectives would seek to establish the circumstances of the incident.
He further called on the public to be patient during the investigation and to refrain from speculation.
“We further call on members of the public who may have information regarding the incident to volunteer and report to any police station or through our helplines 999 112 or 0800 722 203,” reads. we partly in the declaration.
The incident was reported to the Thindigua Police Station and registered under BO number 10/23/12/2021.
Itumbi, who is Vice President William Ruto’s digital strategist, was reportedly arrested by four strangers outside a barber shop along Kiambu Road, where he had gone to shave.
Eyewitnesses said the alleged kidnappers approached him as he was leaving the barber shop and forced him into a silver Toyota Allion before heading for Nairobi.
On Twitter Thursday evening, Itumbi’s brother David Itumbi said he found him in a hospital along Thika Road.
“My brother was severely beaten. We thank God that he is alive. On his own account, he was arrested by the police and beaten and tortured. This is the condition we found him in. Please pray. for his recovery, ”David wrote.
Photos shared on social media show Itumbi in a hospital with his hands and legs bandaged. One photo shows blood oozing from his left eye.
