Wake Forest vs Boston College Game Canceled

The Wake Forest basketball game scheduled for tomorrow against Boston College has been called off due to an outbreak of covid-19 in the British Columbia team.

Under rules decided by the ACC at the start of the season, the game was considered a forfeit for Boston College, which means Wake Forest is now 2-0 in the ACC. A free win is cool and all, but I’d rather have the ACC reschedule the game or cancel the game altogether so the Deacs can schedule another opponent. As far as I know, the Division I manual allows teams to play 28 games plus a 3-game tournament (or 29 games with a 2-game tournament), which means that with 20 conference games and the Emerald Coast Classic (which was technically 3 games since it included the NC A&T game), the Deacs are only allowed 8 non-conference games this season. Obviously Wake has played those eight games already, so unless the next few games are called off I don’t think they can schedule any other opponents.

It is certainly not the last game on the calendar that will have to be canceled or postponed, as the omicron variant of the coronavirus appears to be spreading rapidly among teams in all major sports. This week alone, it forced the NFL to postpone games and rearrange the schedule so teams can play. The ACC and conference athletic directors are meeting on Wednesday to discuss the covid policy change, so there’s a chance these matches won’t result in a forfeit in the future. This is probably for the best, as over the next few weeks there are a number of games that are unlikely to be played. It also doesn’t seem fair to punish teams that follow all the rules given to them but still end up with players in protocol simply because of the contagiousness of the omicron variant. Hopefully everyone stays healthy this season.
