The Jamaica Classic has officially announced its lineup for Jersey Mike’s Jamaica Classic 2022, and Wake Forest will be one of 8 teams competing this season.
The Deacs were supposed to make the trip in 2020 but had to cancel due to the pandemic, so it’s great that the team now has the opportunity to travel to Montego Bay to play basketball. Wake will face the La Salle Explorers on Nov. 18 in the first round, then face either Georgetown or Loyola Marymount on Nov. 20 in the second round depending on the results.
Looking at the tournament field, frankly, I see no reason why the Deacs shouldn’t
dominate win this thing. Obviously, the teams won’t be exactly the same as last season, but based on the 2021-22 season, Wake Forest is obviously the best team in the event. In fact, Wake Forest is the only team in the tournament to finish in KenPom’s top 100 last season and is one of 2 teams with a Division I winning record last season.
That being said, being the best team on paper and going out and proving it on the pitch are two very different things, and ignoring an opponent is pretty much the easiest way to lose a game. Either way, it should be a great experience for the players and hopefully they can take home a trophy.
